Serious scuba diving entails more than just the basic gears of the beginner diver. The diver needs more than just his set of mask, fins, regulator, oxygen tank, and wet suit to ensure the diver’s safety.

For external data that the diver should know, the assistance of a diving computer is essential. The diving computer provides information on the amount of time needed for decompression and even the depth of the dive itself. It also gauges data such as the levels of nitrogen content in the bloodstream, or decompression sickness that could be fatal to the diver’s life.

It would be wise to compare brands of diving computers before actually making a purchase. Aside from considering factors such as cost, quality and accuracy of the machine should also be weighed out. One effective way of doing this would be to search for reviews of the products and gather consensus of those who have bought and used it in their dives.

After buying one’s personal choice it would be prudent to study and understand the features and commands of the equipment. It should be known by heart, in the same way that a beginner is trained to deal with various situations that can happen to him under water. To get used to operating the product, it would be advisable to use its functions little be little in short-term expeditions.

Various unforeseen accidents can occur to a diver, especially when he is underwater. One trick is not to panic and to remain calm. Fear is a diver’s greatest enemy since it can blur out good judgment and training. Besides, another aspect that should be checked from time to time is the relaxed breathing of the diver. Panic can cause hyperventilation or worse, rapid ascent towards the surface can cause bubbles to form in the body’s tissues that could cause lack of sensation, immobility, or death.

Watching all those cool surfers showing off on the tv-screen, walking that ultra-cool surfer walk from the water to the beach, with the surfbroad held tightly under the arm makes anyone want to be a surfer. But how does one start? Join a Surfschule (surfing-school) of course. Anyone can learn surfing, or Surfen as it is called in German, age no-bar, sex no-bar. All one needs is an adventurous heart, and a good teacher.

Surfen is all about balance. It’s about keeping your center of gravity intact while the waves throw you around. You need a really good pair of legs and a keen mind to be a good surfer. On the surf-board, you’ll be battling the waves, fighting to keep your balance and still managing to have a huge amount of fun. Sounds tempting? Find a surfschule, and you can experience it.

Luckily surfing has become so popular of late, that there are surf-schools everywhere. Go to any good surfing spots, and you will find shops renting or selling surfen gear. A surfschule shouldn’t be far off. Many shops also arrange lessons on demand from local pros.

As a beginner you can’t graduate straight to the surfboard that professionals use. That surfboard called the shortboard is harder to maneuver and balance for beginners and surfen won’t be any fun for you on this board. Every surfschule has a longer longboard that is easier to balance on. The longboard is supported better by the waves, and even a beginner should be able to keep upright. The longboard is usually between 8 to 10 feet long.

The second thing that you need is a good wetsuit. Almost every Surfschule has wetsuits in a variety of sizes to fit different builds of people and you should be able to rent one. If you want to buy a wetsuit, make sure you but something that’s comfortable. Don’t ever buy a wet suit that’s too tight, because then surfen will be punishment not pleasure.

Most people prefer buying a wetsuit to renting one, because it’s a pretty personal clothing item. Also it’s cheaper than a surfboard, so you can easily afford one. Surfen is addictive, and once you get started, you’re going to come back again and again. You can buy your surging gear from any surfing store, but do ask your surfschule instructor about the type of suit you need.

If you’re wondering how long it takes to get started with surfing, the answer is a week. If you take daily lessons and work on surfen with dedication and seriousness, you’ll be surfing upright in a week’s time. Of course you must possess a certain degree of agility and good reflexes. The first few days of surfen will be hard, but your surfschule instructor will guide you, and once this gestation period is finished, you should find surfing much more easier.

One thing that you need to remember is that surfen exposes you to a lot of water, and if you have any kind of skin allergies or problems that are related to salt-water, you need to make sure surfing is safe for you. Also ask your surfschule if there’s any dangerous marine life like stingrays around, and avoid the areas that you’re asked to.

That said, here’s the last bit of advice. Take it easy in the beginning! Yes, don’t imagine that you’ll be able to surf big waves straight way and don’t be disappointed when you can’t. Surfen like any sport needs time to master.

Like millions of Americans do each year, my wife and I scheduled a trip to Mexico to take a much needed vacation. If you are like me, vacation time is usually filled with everything but exercise and I had no intention of ruining this vacation with daily workouts and proper eating habits when I would rather be sitting on the beach drinking a Mojito.

There are, of course, an unlimited number of activities that one would find exciting in a place like the island of Cozumel, Mexico, but I was set on kicking back and relaxing until I ran across an interesting magazine that featured scuba diving at the very location we were planning to visit.

For years, I had been curious about scuba diving and together my wife and I decided to find a local dive center and look into getting our open-water certifications so that we could "try it" while on our upcoming vacation - exercise was not the intention really.

To my surprise, the requirements for passing our certifications were fairly easy but it did require decent swimming skills and a reasonable level of physical fitness. I also found that a large majority of divers are over the age of 35. Proving that being young is not a requirement.

For the most part, Scuba diving is a pretty easy activity to learn, but it is an intensive exercise and does require the knowledge and skills pertaining to the equipment and safety for the individual, that persons diving partner, and also for the environment in which you will be diving. Hence, the certification requirement before most dive operations will take you out on a dive trip.

An interesting aspect of learning to dive was finding out just how much this activity feels like a real honest to goodness workout. We arrive in Cozumel and checked into our hotel and the dive operation center the same day to let them know we were there and ready to go diving as we had reserved five days of two-tank boat dives plus two night dives. We took the day to relax and acclimate to our surroundings and figure out which bartenders served the best drinks - (Did I mention that Mojitos are my favorite?) The Dive Master informed us that we needed to be at the dock ready with our gear by 7:45am the next day- so we checked our equipment, weights, and wetsuits just to make sure we were prepared and arrived on-time that morning.

If you have never lugged around dive gear - you have a real treat in store. It’s heavy, but it’s your life-safety equipment, so you don’t care how heavy it is, as long as it works as expected. Again, be prepared for a workout.

On the first day of diving, I made the mistake of thinking that it would be a walk in the park - sort of a lazy day - so I had a big breakfast, and an extra cup of coffee. But, to my dismay, I soon realized that my eating routine prior to each dive needed to be adjusted and the real trick was to eat fruits and drink water before the dive, and an adequate meal afterwards to replenish the energy lost during ‘the workout’. Because, it is a workout, even if you are having the time of your life - you are toning your muscles, tendons, and ligaments. You are stretching things you haven’t stretched in years - and you are carrying a heavy tank and weights around like a soldier going into battle.

After five days, and twelve separate dives, I was eating better nutritionally than before I arrived, and feeling like I could lift a truck on my back. I was amazed considering that my intention was to have a lazy vacation. The funny part was that I was more relaxed and in better shape when we left our vacation spot than when we had arrived.

That trip opened my eyes to many new an exciting aspects of vacationing and I learned that I can get the exercise I need by doing the things I love to do. I learned that scuba diving is one of the most fantastic activities I have ever pursued and will continue to dive as long as I am physically and mentally able.

The best part of the trip was realizing that I had found a way to exercise and still spend an enormous amount of time underwater seeing and experiencing life in a mesmerizing fashion. Until you are there and see for yourself, words cannot express the beauty or the spender of the sea and all its inhabitants.

So, next time you feel like you’re getting bored with your workouts and you are thinking of giving up. Don’t forget, exercise can be fun, exciting, exhilarating, and memorable.

Though surfing requires little equipment, the surfboard and the wetsuit can be expensive. The leash and the wax are not really that expensive, especially if you use them carefully and thus do not need to buy extra ones every month. However, affording the purchase of a surfboard and a wetsuit is not for everyone and thus, you will need to consider your possibilities if you are planning to start practicing this sport.

Fortunately both the surfboard and the wetsuit are long-lasting equipment. Thus, though with some effort, you can save to purchase the equipment or use some kind of financial product and pay for everything in small installments. Here are some tips that can help you get what you need to start practicing surfing without too many hassles or sacrifices.

Price Range And Savings

The price range of surfboards goes from a couple of hundreds and up to a few thousands of dollars while a surf wetsuit can cost a couple of hundreds generally with some higher price rare exceptions that can be as high as one or two thousands dollars. All in all, the whole kit can demand an average price of a thousands dollars sometimes reaching higher amounts depending on the quality of the equipment.

Saving that kind of money is not such a difficult task. Yet, all depends on your income and spending. Modifying your budget to include a small amount every month towards a savings account for the purchase of the equipment should not be such a sacrifice. Yet, if you do not have that kind of control over your finances, you may want to resort to other means.

Financing The Purchase Of Equipment

Most of the stores selling this kind of equipment will accept credit cards without ado. They may even have some promotions specially tailored for credit card purchases. Bear in mind though, that financing with credit cards is rather expensive compared to most of the other financial products. Though using a credit card may be the most comfortable and quick financial option, chances are that it will not be the cheapest one.

Most banks and financial institutions are offering unsecured personal loans for their customers every day. It may be time to take advantage of these offers. Make sure to compare interest rates first (look especially to the APR which combines all costs in one so you can easily compare). Then analyze what kind of repayment program you would benefit more of. A longer repayment program implies lower monthly payments but higher amounts spent on interests while shorter repayment programs may entail higher monthly payments but the costs of financing will be lower.

If you decide to go for an unsecured personal loan, consider including the amount necessary for taking some lessons, if you are just starting to practice this sport. It is not that costly and it can save you a lot of time and hassles.

The requirements for getting approved for an unsecured loan are not that harsh. If you are already a client of the bank or financial institution, chances are that you may have a pre-approved loan available. Otherwise you may have to show proof of employment or income and provide authorization for a short credit verification.

If you are a beach lover, then you probably made sure that your Port Macquarie accommodation was as close to the beach as humanly possible. There are so many fun things to do on a beach, and the warm sand plus the captivating sounds of the surf is a downright relaxing place for those of us who relish the chance to get away from the rat race of life for a little while.

You’ll have lots of sand, as there are a total of eight separate beaches in Port Macquarie which means you have your choice of walking along the edge of the ocean while enjoying the view, enjoying some great fishing, swimming, having a picnic or barbecue (careful of the sand!) or doing some surfing.

Ah. Surfing. Some call it merely a sport, while others insist that it is an art, a dance form or even a lifestyle. Competitive surfers usually don’t wax as rhapsodic as those who are surfing just for the sheer joy of it. These joyous surfers are known in Port Macquarie as Soul Surfers. As a matter of fact, the term is so ubiquitous that there is a surfing school called the Soul Surfing Experience. A soul surfer enjoys surfing with or without a group of people around. They want to experience the sights and scents, the waves and the wetness all alone. Soul surfers just enjoy the ocean!

If you are a surfer who is visiting Port Macquarie for the first time, you may want to take advantage of the Soul Surfing experience and their surfing tour and/or surfing lessons. The surfing tour Ultimate Experience package provides very nice accommodations at Port Macquarie hotels with wonderful beach views. The catering package that is included will allow you to enjoy breakfast, morning tea, lunch, and a two course dinner each day. One and a half hours of Yoga classes are provided each day of your stay, and spa treatments such as massages are also included in the tour package.

A surfing tour is available for you to have two hours of surfing every morning, and you are transported to the day’s selected beach in a very nice 4WD vehicle. If by chance you need a surfboard or a wetsuit, they can be provided. Port Macquarie is noted for its beach locations that are away from the crowds as well as its ‘family style’ beaches. Soul surfing is easily done on a beach that is not full of a lot of people! You will be driven down the coast until just the right waves are spotted, and once this is done, you and the ocean can get acquainted.

There is another, longer tour offered, this one called a ‘Full Day’ surf tour, from 7 AM until 2 PM. There is also a surf tour just for the ladies, called Woman’s Surf Tour, from 8 AM until 1 PM.

Soul surfing can be one of the most pleasant experiences you will have while you are visiting Port Macquarie!

Are you looking out to buy a new wetsuit for a scuba diving vacation but don’t know where to start? Before you drift dive into the coast of Florida or explore the underwater splendor of Fiji Islands, allow us to impart a few guidelines to help you select a matching wetsuit that would provide ultimate comfort and flexibility as you cruise the depths of your intended diving destination.

Shorty or Full Suit?

Shop through online retailers and surely you will learn that wetsuits don’t come in a single style or design for that matter. Some are outfitted with sleeves while others are not. A particular wetsuit may be designed to wrap around the entire body while another one would only conceal the torso, with the garment rising a little over the knees. It would save you time to buy whatever feels right as to price and preferences, but then common sense would dictate that wetsuits come in different forms and sizes for a reason. Common terms to encounter include jumpsuits, farmer johns and shorties though selection should be focused on the purchase of either shorties or a full suit.

If you plan to dive in warm water, particularly in tropical or subtropical locations, a sturdy piece of neoprene shorties will give ample protection and insulation. Now if you’re adventure should lead you to cold water locations and at thermocline depths at that, settle for a thick, full suit instead of shorties. Getting the entire body insulated from the chilly conditions of the depths is necessary to prevent hypothermia and provide utmost comfort to the diver as well.

Thickness of the Material

Neoprene is a compressible garment that has become the standard material for wetsuits due to its ability to respond efficiently to changes in pressure with a corresponding shift in volume or aid in the diver’s neutral buoyancy. Warm water dives would require the neoprene wetsuit to carry a torso thickness of 2mm while for cold water dives, torso thickness should vary from 3mm to 5mm where its application is directly proportional to the drops in temperature of a particular dive spot.

Be very particular with the size and fit

The one size fits all criteria does not apply to wetsuits. As much as possible, the garment should snuggly fit the diver’s body since a poor fit around salient sections, such as the arms and around the thighs, allows more water to collect on these areas instead of a thin film, which compromises the material’s ability to keep you warm.

Overall Flexibility

The flexibility of movement underwater should be a primary consideration. If a thick wetsuit inhibits easy movement then it loses its utility no matter how efficient it may be in keeping the diver warm. Check if the wetsuit comes with a front zipper for easy donning and if the garment is outfitted with spandex panels which heighten its flexibility.

When it involves fixing the surfing board, there are ways that you can use to personally fix the board. But you must know how to use the correct tools if you have to succeed in the repairs. Remember that the wrongs instruments may further worsen the damage or you can even cause damage to places where no harm was ever experienced. Therefore, always avoid a situation where an attempt to cure a damage may lead to further harm.

First and foremost, you will have to appreciate how these materials are made and what should be done or not done to them. You ought to know that you may cause serious injury to the windsurfing board and this may eventually put your windsurfing board out of use. Anything uncompromising to these materials is not good to be used when fixing the board.

What Are The Things That Should Not Be Done To The Foam Hub Board?

Your first objective in fixing damage on the board is to make it have one and the same quality as it had ahead of being damaged. Therefore, nothing new should be added to the old board. This will not give it the same texture or quality as before. Never add or make use of those elements that are incompatible with the foam hub. This will include materials which consist of polyester or vinylester. Remember that these materials have styrene compounds in them and this will dissolve the foam hub.

Also steer clear of using wax because this is not going stick well. They will further liquefy when under the influence of high temperatures and may further soil the region of repairs. Keep in mind that duct strip will also act poorly to your foam hub as it is going to leave humid deposits and will not also stick as you will expect. These are the more reasons why you must use only the most accurate materials needed for fixing your windsurfing board.

Why Use The Most Accurate Repair Materials?

One of the simplest reasons to use the most accurate repair elements is to make sure that repairs are appropriately done. If the damage on your board is so slight that it does not result to any significant damage, fixing it is not difficult. In most cases it will be easily fixed by affixing another sticker on the hole. But if the damage is more severe, a Ding Stick or Marinetex is very much needed. But remember that this will also take much time.

You should begin by knowing that the foam of the windsurfing board will swell when under the influence of heat and will detract under cold conditions. This means that you will have to wait when temperatures are really down ahead of fixing the foam. Remember that leakages may further occur when expansion on the foam is being experienced. And this will likely be caused by the materials that you put on the foam.

Before you apply anything on the foam, make sure it is clean. After this, the area should be scratched to make it a bit rough. Any screw should be taken out before fixing the foam. It is best to use a Ding or Epoxy Stick because they are more durable and will give the best results. These should always be a necessity in your repair kit.

Slash a portion of the ding that is big enough to cover the damaged area. Make sure you close the remainder of the ding. Remember that exposure to air will spoil the ding. Use the piece of ding to cover any area until you are sure that the damage should have been accurately fixed. Remember that there should be no air space in it. This will further cause leaks on the foam. This should be left throughout the night to dry well. You can paint again the fixed area if the new color does not conform to the old one.

Is your child interested in learning to surf? The sport or surfing is growing in popularity, especially among kids. If your child wants to learn to surf, this article is for you.

It’s common for parents to search for the ideal place for their kids’ "learn to surf" experience. However, here might not be a "best" place to learn to surf in the traditional sense. Instead, certain elements must be in place to make sure your child’s learn to surf experience is a safe and positive one.

Learning to surf should be a safe, fun and rewarding experience. In general, there are three main components to your child’s "learn to surf" experience.

These include:

1. The instructor(s);
2. The beach and ocean environment; and
3. The equipment (the surfboard itself)

The first and most important criterion is that your child takes surfing lessons from an experienced and qualified instructor. Seems obvious, right? And yet, you’d be amazed how many parents either try to teach their kids themselves (bad idea!), or who just buy their kids a surfboard and send them into the water to fend for themselves (an even worse idea!).

Not only should you make sure your child’s surfing instructor has the proper skills and credentials, you want to also be certain he or she has lots of prior experience teaching other kids your child’s age. Ideally, your child’s surfing instructor will provide a well-rounded surfing lesson curriculum incorporating surf etiquette, water safety, environmental awareness and more.

With respect to beach and ocean environment, the ideal atmosphere will offer warm, clean water, gentle surf, a soft sandy bottom, consistent wave activity and a long stretch of beach. Small crowds are and added bonus so your child is not distracted by others and does not infringe upon other surfers’ space while learning. It is also important to learn to surf at a beach staffed with public lifeguards.

Safe, modern equipment is an essential component to your child’s learn to surf experience. Your instructor should provide a user-friendly (long and wide) surfboards since these types of boards are easier to maneuver and learn on. The board will ideally be constructed of soft foam (rather than wood or fiberglass) with flexible fins and a long leash for added safety and learning pleasure.

Since the ocean water is generally cold, and because kids get cold easily, be sure your child wears a rash guard at a minimum, but preferably a wetsuit, for the duration of the lesson. If you don’t have your own, your surf instructor should provide this for you.

Where can you find quality surfing instruction? Summer camps that specialize in instructional surfing activites are one of your better options, because not only will your son or daughter learn to surf, they’ll make lots of new friends in the process. But you can also find individual/private instructors by looking on the internet or asking friends for a recommendation.

If you go the summer camp route, we recommend a surf camp that’s accredited by the American Camp Association. Accreditation ensures the camp meets or exceeds up to 300 best-practice industry standards relating to safety, presentation of activities, supervision and more.

In any case, make sure you check references and that you are completely satisfied with your choice in surfing instruction before making any financial commitment. At the very least, you should be promised a money-back guarantee if for any reason the surf camp or surfing instructor does not deliver what they promise or you are unsatisfied for any reason.

Here’s to a great "learn to surf" experience for your child. Surfing is so much fun!

A wetsuit is a piece of skintight and lightweight clothing that are mostly worn by water sports athletes. Made of a special material called neoprene, it helps divers, swimmers and surfers retain their body heat by creating a layer of water between their body and the suit. Buying a wetsuit will benefit you, since it is said to boost your performance greatly.

However, not all of us, especially beginners, are adept at taking care of a wetsuit. Thankfully for us, it is not that complicated and not easy to pick up. Here are some tips on wetsuit maintenance:

1) Storage. When you first get your wetsuit, you will probably be amazed at how stiff it feels. However, like other pieces of clothing, it’ll soon be softer the more times you wear it. However, you don’t want it to be too soft and lumpy the next time you put it on. So, the best way to maintain its crisp and solid feel is to store it properly.

If possible, always hang your suit, instead of folding it. That way, you will avoid creases which may lead to cracks and eventually to tears. So, find a solid, beefy hanger, not those thin wire hangers you use to hang your shirts with. Those can dig deep to the heavy suit and cause cracks.

2) Soiling it. It’s the ultimate question asked by every first-time diver; can you relieve yourself in the wetsuit while you’re diving? The answer will delight those with small bladders. Yes, you can pee in a wetsuit while you’re underwater. It won’t harm your suit in any way, since urine is sterile and don’t contain any materials that might corrode neoprene, unless you have a urinary tract infection, that is.

The only effect that noticeable is a warm tingling sensation around your groin, which incidentally may warm you up for a while, but will cool your body heat in the long run. That, and the fact that a dark yellow cloud might appear between your legs. So, if you feel your bladder won’t hold out when you’re in a wetsuit and diving, drink plenty of water. It’ll decolorize your urine and make it invisible.

3) Cleaning it. Most surf shops should sell a special shampoo that can be used for wetsuit maintenance. Do not clean it in a washing machine with all the other clothes, lest you want to damage the suit. Hand-wash it once every two weeks if you are using it regularly. If you want to keep it from smelling, spray on some wetsuit deodorizer to disinfect it.

Wetsuit maintenance is a very important aspect of owning a wetsuit. Take good care of a wetsuit and it’ll stay with your for many years.
