Mauritius. This tropical Indian Ocean Paradise. ‘A drop in the ocean’ Is only a dot in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Mauritius has a well-developed infrastructure and tourism industry. It hosts visiting tourist from all over the world in luxury hotels, apartments and bungalows. Besides the beautiful long white beaches and crystal clear tropical lagoons, scuba diving is one of the main attractions for tourists.

The excellent sea conditions and beautiful coral reefs make Mauritius a perfect place to learn to dive.
So both beginners and certified divers can be sure to have safe enjoyable dives in these perfect conditions. Especially on the north east coast where the lagoons and sea are protected from the trade winds, the Grand Bay and Trou aux Biches areas host the best tropical fish life and coral reefs. Usually all are boat dives to dive sites outside the barrier reefs. This is because the barrier reefs run almost completely around the Island with breaks or passes in the reef through which boats can pass to get into the open sea. The lagoons inside the barrier reefs are shallow and not suitable for diving. The sites in crystal clear water outside the barrier reef are very specifically located and easily accessible by boat. To get the best out of your diving experience in Mauritius it is advisable to dive with one of the accredited dive centers that will take you to all the best sites and ensure that you have a safe comfortable scuba diving Mauritius experience.

The Tourism Authority in Mauritius controls all registered dive centers and issues licenses to the boat skippers and dive operator that meet the require standards. All internationally recognized diving certifications are accepted and Mauritius has become a training ground for beginner divers because of the extremely easy diving conditions.

Unlike the reefs in Seychelles and the Maledives islands the coral reefs have not been bleached or affected by the warming of the ocean. The crystal clear water, the abundance of fish life and colorful reefs provide magnificent backdrops for underwater photography and filming. In the Trou aux Biches and Grand bay areas artificial reefs have been create by sinking wrecks at specific points. These wrecks, usually old Japanese fishing trawlers host an abundance of fish and coral life creating exciting dive sites and interesting backdrops for underwater photo and film. There are no real wall dives in Mauritius. In most areas the seabed slopes away gradually becoming deeper as you move away from the barrier reefs. Therefore most dive sites have a bottom at a reasonable depth making diving for beginners and experienced diver safer and less stressful. There are however small drops like ledges on some of the sites creating very interesting giant rock structure hosting larger fish life, gorgonian fan coral, some soft corals and in some spots black coral.

All round Mauritius is really a very safe and interesting location for a diving holiday. There is something for everyone.

When in Bonaire. . .

If you want more adventures in diving, Bonaire will provide a variety of dive sites. World class divers give Bonaire a rate of 10 out of 10. The place has more than a 100 dive sites. Each of these with strict diving levels - novice, intermediate, and advanced. But even if you are ready to jump into the water, hours after you get off your plane, you are prohibited by law to do so.

You must first attend a refresher class on scuba diving at the dive shop. Part of the enforced one-hour review is to familiarize tourists on the Bonaire Marine Park rules; this is followed by a collection of $10 per head. But this inconvenience is soon eclipsed by the pleasures waiting in the blue yonder.

The Bonaire Attractions

Aside from the great diving, Bonaire has much to offer on land. In Gotomeer, flamingos converge to feast on the shrimps in the brackish waters, and nest on the salt flats. Interesting bits and pieces of the islands history are preserved - the 1837 lighthouse, and 1838 obelisks built to aid mariners find anchor.

After a day of diving and hiking the trails, you can go kayaking, windsurfing, bird watching, mountain biking, horse-back riding, and deep sea fishing. There is no end to the wonderful and interesting possibilities in this Antilles Island. Family members will enjoy the stress-free environment, and children can learn from the environmental efforts to protect the island’s natural resources.

Come On, The Diving’s Great

Scuba diving enthusiasts are directed to the appropriate sites for diving. Bonaire officials are strict about this. Novice and intermediate divers are prohibited from sites with strong currents, and only those with solid years of certified scuba diving experience are allowed to dive here. Happily, there are several drop sites where all levels can take the plunge.

For the diving, the Town Pier is a popular dive site for diving. Bonaire diving aficionados of all levels - novice to advanced - enjoy the depths of 20-40 feet. Again, there are restrictions. Divers must present the permission of the harbormaster and they must be accompanied by a dive guide from the locality.

Calabas Reef is another site for all-levels diving. Bonaire also takes pride in the Angel City, a site teeming with angelfish, and in Alice in Wonderland, where divers can see schools of parrot fish and French Angels.

Bonaire diving operators give diving assistance for the handicapped, and provide lessons for technical diving. Courses from Advanced Nitrox, decompression procedures, or courses for solo diver and diving instructor levels, are just some of the courses offered.

Going to Bonaire?

If you are planning on that diving excursion to Bonaire, book a flight and reserve a room months before the big day. You can check sites for Bonaire hotels online. Communicate with diving operators for diving tours and get their confirmation about special arrangements. If you are planning to take a break in Bonaire, bring along your valid passport, and return ticket. Pack up your wet suit and scuba diving gear, Bonaire is waiting.

Ever wonder what it would be like to jump into the water and look around 40m below the surface? The underwater world is mysterious and yet inviting, the experience of diving it provides and addictive sense of zen. There’s no better place to have your first dive experience than Thailand - with good conditions year round.

Most dive shops in Thailand offer PADI certification but it’s also possible to find a few offering NAUI and SSI certifications. Beginners may be more comfortable diving in the calmer and shallower waters off the east coast of Thailand, with destinations such as Koh Tao, Koh Samui, Pattaya, Koh Samet or Koh Chang being the most popular on that side.

More advanced divers and those beginners who are confident in their abilities will have a better time diving around Phuket and the Similan Islands. Hotspots for diving around here include Phuket, Phi Phi and Khao Lak.

Phuket has the most upscale dive operations but if you are watching your budget, you might be more comfortable taking a course at Phi Phi or Khao Lak. Phi Phi is quite popular among the younger crowd but there are hotels catering to older couples and families, which also offer scuba diving courses. Khao Lak offers an excellent choice of dive shops and also has a good range of accommodation to suit most tastes. It is also the closest jumping off point to the Similan Islands.

The Similan Islands, technically located in Phang Nga province, provide some of the best dive sites in the world. Protected within a marine national park, the nine islands are still pristine and rich with wildlife above and below the water. Most dive operators will take you ashore at one of the islands, where you can enjoy the powder-white beaches and see exotic birds and monkeys.

Under the waves, the colourful reefs and boulder formations are teeming with coral and a variety of marine life. Sometimes whale sharks are even spotted in the waters, as well as rays and other sharks. Visibility is good, varying from 30-50m.

Much like Phi Phi, Koh Tao is a fun place for backpackers to learn how to scuba dive. This may well be the most affordable place in Thailand to take a PADI Open Water course and to build up your dive log. Unfortunately it’s not the best diving in Thailand - but it’s not yet the worst either. Koh Tao used to offer frequent whale shark sightings but they are relatively rare these days. It’s also conveniently close (2 hours by speed boat) to Samui. In fact you can do diving courses on Samui too.

The number of dive boats on a site is not restricted, so you may find there is too much company around peak dive times. You may find yourself surrounded by 50 to 100 divers at a time, with most of them being Open Water students or day trippers from Samui.

Needless to say, Koh Tao might be great for learning and for progressing to instructor - but it’s not all that great for just recreational diving. Many people come here specifically to advance through courses and proceed with PADI Advanced, Rescue Diver, Dive Master/Master Scuba Diver and Instructor courses.

There are so many choices on Koh Tao that you should look carefully at each dive shop and make sure they offer you the best value for money.

Not all dive instructors are the same, and some are downright scary. Likewise, equipment standards can vary, and you’ll want to make sure any shop you choose has quality equipment and maintains it properly and hygienically. You should also check into the insurance policy of the dive shop and enquire as to if you should purchase your own dive insurance for the hyperbaric chamber if you have an accident.

Most the dive operations in Thailand are run by foreigners, which is just as well since Thais have a rather different approach to safety and responsibility, but you’ll find yourself diving with plenty of Thai staff who are their usual friendly easy-going selves.

 scuba adventure

The first two steps in getting certified in scuba diving is to make sure that you are a reasonably proficient swimmer and you get medical clearance from your doctor to take up the sport. As for the swimming, you don’t have to master every type of stroke. Scuba certification only requires that you are able to swim about 200 yards using any stroke you want and to be able to float or tread on water for about 10 minutes. If you are in good general health and are comfortable in the water, then you should be able to scuba dive without any problems.

There are about 1,900 professional scuba dive centers in North America alone and your local ones should definitely be checked out. Most will run basic certification programs on a regular basis. These centers or shops should be listed in the yellow pages and you can also check with websites of some of the major scuba diving certification agencies such as PADI or NAUI as they will also have listings. Sometimes scuba diving courses are offered at universities too.

Make sure that the course you are interested in taking as well as its instructor are certified with one of the major scuba diving training agencies. This will ensure that you get proper, safe training for both the technical background knowledge and practical skills required for certification as a scuba diver. You also want to end up with an internationally recognized certification card if you want to go scuba diving at various locations around the world.

Some vacation resorts offer ‘resort’ courses lasting a day or two which offer beginners some very basic training in order to try out scuba diving. These are not certification programs. Full certification programs involve classroom work, exams, practical skills sessions at a pool and usually about four open water dives in the sea (lake or ocean). The duration of the classroom work and pool sessions vary from a very intensive weekend (with advance reading) to once a week over several weeks. The open water dives will usually take two more days. Dive centers located in the tropics also offer basic certification programs that last several days to a week. Although the intensive weekend programs are quite feasible, many feel that basic scuba diving courses spread out over a few weeks will help beginners learn the skills better. Scuba diving does involve new skills and to learn them all during one full weekend may be too much for some people.

As for which scuba diving certification training agency is the best, there isn’t any one recognized organization that is better than another. PADI is the most popular in the world but not necessarily better than NAUI or SSI. NAUI course are often more technical in the classroom than those offered by PADI but both will adequately train you to be a scuba diver. The more important factor would be the individual instructor and your own effort during training/studying. In fact, many scuba diving instructors have certifications from several training agencies.

For people living in the more northern regions, there are a few possible routes to take in order to obtain certification. One can travel down south to the tropics and do the entire basic certification course down there in warm weather. However, this will take up a good portion of a vacation since reading, classroom, pool sessions and open water dives all must be done during that time period. A second option is to take the entire course including the open water dives back in home territory. This usually offers beginners the most time since courses can be spread out over a few weeks. However, the water up north is not as warm as in the tropics and the scuba diving could be seasonal. A third option is to take all the classroom and pool sessions back home and then go down south to do the open water dives in warm waters. Many people have taken this route. Your instructor back home will give you a referral letter to bring down to an instructor located down south who will oversee your open water dives. This is a good combination of taking ample time back home to practice the skills in the pool plus getting the classroom work out of the way followed by having nice warm water to dive in for the open water dives. One thing to be aware of if considering this option is to make sure that your travel to the tropics for your open water dives is not too delayed after finishing up with your pool sessions at home. If too much time has elapsed, one could easily forget the skills learned in the pool by the time a vacation comes along.

The underwater world has so much to offer and only a small percentage of the world’s population will ever have the privilege to see it in person rather than on television. Become one of these individuals who will have the honor of exploring the oceans by getting certified in scuba diving.

Open Water Scuba Certification

I decided to sign up for the Open Water Scuba course at the Splash Dive Shop. Cost is $350 USD and it includes all gear, books and 4dives out on the reef. Today was all academic work, I read some of the manual and watched 5 videos.

Scuba lessons

They are my (more experienced) diving boyfriend’s shop of choice. I took my classes at Underwater Sports in Bellevue, which was good enough. The certification classes are pretty standard, so as long as you have a decent instructor.

Advanced SCUBA certification

Become a better diver and improve your basic SCUBA skills with an advanced SCUBA certification from Scuba Haus!  .

When you find yourself tired of the same boring life you can start wondering how to begin a more exciting job and way of life. If you enjoy scuba diving, then the question is : why not working in the diving industry. Finding a diving job is not very difficult, the key point is to know what sort of certifications do you need and how to apply for the vacancies around the world.

To become a professional diving instructor you need to complete many scuba diving courses, get a lot of experience and dive a lot. It always help if you can speak another language of have experience in other fields, like First Aid, Management, boat skills, mechanics, etc.

To become a dive professional you need to do 2 vital courses the Divemaster and the PADI IDC . The Divemaster course will give you the option of working as a guide, this is a nice job, but the salary is usually lower that the salary a scuba diving instructor makes. To become a scuba diving instructor you need to do your PADI IDC course.
One you complete these courses, you need to apply to scuba jobs around the world. Before you go straight to scuba diving jobsites, try to think carefull about your objectives and about the kind of employement conditions you want and the countries you are willing to travel.

Not all the jobs are the same and working in Australia is very different than working in Honduras or Egypt. You need to be smart and think with your head, and work towards getting the best diving certificates that will give you the highest chances of finding that ideal dive job.

My best advice is to contact people by phone first, there is nothing better than speaking to people, and once you get the proper information then send your application via Scuba Diving jobsites or directly to the dive center.

You need to remember that finding job is not impossible, but it can take time, and once you get the ideal dive job, you need to work hard to keep it. Always be aware that sooner or later you will want to go back home,so when you travel to your diving location, have a plan B. Medical insurance, work insurance and current teaching status is important to improve your chances of finding job.

Try to be patient and don’t think your new diving job will be a holiday, some days can clearly difficult, but always remember that any day diving is much better than any day at the office!

So, I know what you are thinking… where to start? Well, like any other diving jobs, start by diving a lot, talking to people and check divers jobs websites, where you can get yourself a clear idea of where are the vacancies around the world. Central America, the Red Sea, Australia and South East Asia are great places to start your dive job hunting.

So good luck and see you underwater
