Wetsuits are meant to keep divers warm by giving them thermal protection. There are some important guidelines which a diver should learn regarding the wetsuit he might acquire and use. First of all, it is important to know that they are usually made from neoprene; most of the times open cell neoprene. Besides, when wetsuits have a coating added to the neoprene they are easier to be worn and taken off.

The practice of free diving and scuba diving imply the use of different kinds of wetsuits. While a 5 mm thick wetsuit would be ideal for keeping warm a free diver, a scuba diver would need a 7 mm thick wetsuit to achieve the same results. Besides, while most free diving wetsuits don’t have a zipper, most scuba diving wetsuits do come with them.

If you are looking for an open cell neoprene wetsuit, it is important that you have into account the fact that they can be easily damaged. If, for example, you are going to use jewelry under your open cell neoprene wetsuit, this could easily damage it and open it, so you should be very careful with it or try to find another kind of wetsuit instead of it. If you have long finger nails you should be careful as well since you could damage it while putting it on or taking it off.

It is also important to have in mind that free diving wetsuits should fit the diver in order to work well and give him the proper thermal protection. If a free diving wetsuit is loose or too tight it would not give the protection it should and it could even become a problem since it could be an obstacle to the diver’s movements.

There also are recommendations on how to maintain and store your wetsuit. In order to store it properly while you are not using it, you should hang your wetsuit up avoiding folding it since that could damage it. Besides this, you should make sure to wash the suit after using it and make sure to wash all salty water off from it.

 scuba adventure

The first two steps in getting certified in scuba diving is to make sure that you are a reasonably proficient swimmer and you get medical clearance from your doctor to take up the sport. As for the swimming, you don’t have to master every type of stroke. Scuba certification only requires that you are able to swim about 200 yards using any stroke you want and to be able to float or tread on water for about 10 minutes. If you are in good general health and are comfortable in the water, then you should be able to scuba dive without any problems.

There are about 1,900 professional scuba dive centers in North America alone and your local ones should definitely be checked out. Most will run basic certification programs on a regular basis. These centers or shops should be listed in the yellow pages and you can also check with websites of some of the major scuba diving certification agencies such as PADI or NAUI as they will also have listings. Sometimes scuba diving courses are offered at universities too.

Make sure that the course you are interested in taking as well as its instructor are certified with one of the major scuba diving training agencies. This will ensure that you get proper, safe training for both the technical background knowledge and practical skills required for certification as a scuba diver. You also want to end up with an internationally recognized certification card if you want to go scuba diving at various locations around the world.

Some vacation resorts offer ‘resort’ courses lasting a day or two which offer beginners some very basic training in order to try out scuba diving. These are not certification programs. Full certification programs involve classroom work, exams, practical skills sessions at a pool and usually about four open water dives in the sea (lake or ocean). The duration of the classroom work and pool sessions vary from a very intensive weekend (with advance reading) to once a week over several weeks. The open water dives will usually take two more days. Dive centers located in the tropics also offer basic certification programs that last several days to a week. Although the intensive weekend programs are quite feasible, many feel that basic scuba diving courses spread out over a few weeks will help beginners learn the skills better. Scuba diving does involve new skills and to learn them all during one full weekend may be too much for some people.

As for which scuba diving certification training agency is the best, there isn’t any one recognized organization that is better than another. PADI is the most popular in the world but not necessarily better than NAUI or SSI. NAUI course are often more technical in the classroom than those offered by PADI but both will adequately train you to be a scuba diver. The more important factor would be the individual instructor and your own effort during training/studying. In fact, many scuba diving instructors have certifications from several training agencies.

For people living in the more northern regions, there are a few possible routes to take in order to obtain certification. One can travel down south to the tropics and do the entire basic certification course down there in warm weather. However, this will take up a good portion of a vacation since reading, classroom, pool sessions and open water dives all must be done during that time period. A second option is to take the entire course including the open water dives back in home territory. This usually offers beginners the most time since courses can be spread out over a few weeks. However, the water up north is not as warm as in the tropics and the scuba diving could be seasonal. A third option is to take all the classroom and pool sessions back home and then go down south to do the open water dives in warm waters. Many people have taken this route. Your instructor back home will give you a referral letter to bring down to an instructor located down south who will oversee your open water dives. This is a good combination of taking ample time back home to practice the skills in the pool plus getting the classroom work out of the way followed by having nice warm water to dive in for the open water dives. One thing to be aware of if considering this option is to make sure that your travel to the tropics for your open water dives is not too delayed after finishing up with your pool sessions at home. If too much time has elapsed, one could easily forget the skills learned in the pool by the time a vacation comes along.

The underwater world has so much to offer and only a small percentage of the world’s population will ever have the privilege to see it in person rather than on television. Become one of these individuals who will have the honor of exploring the oceans by getting certified in scuba diving.

Open Water Scuba Certification

I decided to sign up for the Open Water Scuba course at the Splash Dive Shop. Cost is $350 USD and it includes all gear, books and 4dives out on the reef. Today was all academic work, I read some of the manual and watched 5 videos.

Scuba lessons

They are my (more experienced) diving boyfriend’s shop of choice. I took my classes at Underwater Sports in Bellevue, which was good enough. The certification classes are pretty standard, so as long as you have a decent instructor.

Advanced SCUBA certification

Become a better diver and improve your basic SCUBA skills with an advanced SCUBA certification from Scuba Haus!  .

When you find yourself tired of the same boring life you can start wondering how to begin a more exciting job and way of life. If you enjoy scuba diving, then the question is : why not working in the diving industry. Finding a diving job is not very difficult, the key point is to know what sort of certifications do you need and how to apply for the vacancies around the world.

To become a professional diving instructor you need to complete many scuba diving courses, get a lot of experience and dive a lot. It always help if you can speak another language of have experience in other fields, like First Aid, Management, boat skills, mechanics, etc.

To become a dive professional you need to do 2 vital courses the Divemaster and the PADI IDC . The Divemaster course will give you the option of working as a guide, this is a nice job, but the salary is usually lower that the salary a scuba diving instructor makes. To become a scuba diving instructor you need to do your PADI IDC course.
One you complete these courses, you need to apply to scuba jobs around the world. Before you go straight to scuba diving jobsites, try to think carefull about your objectives and about the kind of employement conditions you want and the countries you are willing to travel.

Not all the jobs are the same and working in Australia is very different than working in Honduras or Egypt. You need to be smart and think with your head, and work towards getting the best diving certificates that will give you the highest chances of finding that ideal dive job.

My best advice is to contact people by phone first, there is nothing better than speaking to people, and once you get the proper information then send your application via Scuba Diving jobsites or directly to the dive center.

You need to remember that finding job is not impossible, but it can take time, and once you get the ideal dive job, you need to work hard to keep it. Always be aware that sooner or later you will want to go back home,so when you travel to your diving location, have a plan B. Medical insurance, work insurance and current teaching status is important to improve your chances of finding job.

Try to be patient and don’t think your new diving job will be a holiday, some days can clearly difficult, but always remember that any day diving is much better than any day at the office!

So, I know what you are thinking… where to start? Well, like any other diving jobs, start by diving a lot, talking to people and check divers jobs websites, where you can get yourself a clear idea of where are the vacancies around the world. Central America, the Red Sea, Australia and South East Asia are great places to start your dive job hunting.

So good luck and see you underwater

Serious scuba diving entails more than just the basic gears of the beginner diver. The diver needs more than just his set of mask, fins, regulator, oxygen tank, and wet suit to ensure the diver’s safety.

For external data that the diver should know, the assistance of a diving computer is essential. The diving computer provides information on the amount of time needed for decompression and even the depth of the dive itself. It also gauges data such as the levels of nitrogen content in the bloodstream, or decompression sickness that could be fatal to the diver’s life.

It would be wise to compare brands of diving computers before actually making a purchase. Aside from considering factors such as cost, quality and accuracy of the machine should also be weighed out. One effective way of doing this would be to search for reviews of the products and gather consensus of those who have bought and used it in their dives.

After buying one’s personal choice it would be prudent to study and understand the features and commands of the equipment. It should be known by heart, in the same way that a beginner is trained to deal with various situations that can happen to him under water. To get used to operating the product, it would be advisable to use its functions little be little in short-term expeditions.

Various unforeseen accidents can occur to a diver, especially when he is underwater. One trick is not to panic and to remain calm. Fear is a diver’s greatest enemy since it can blur out good judgment and training. Besides, another aspect that should be checked from time to time is the relaxed breathing of the diver. Panic can cause hyperventilation or worse, rapid ascent towards the surface can cause bubbles to form in the body’s tissues that could cause lack of sensation, immobility, or death.

Though surfing requires little equipment, the surfboard and the wetsuit can be expensive. The leash and the wax are not really that expensive, especially if you use them carefully and thus do not need to buy extra ones every month. However, affording the purchase of a surfboard and a wetsuit is not for everyone and thus, you will need to consider your possibilities if you are planning to start practicing this sport.

Fortunately both the surfboard and the wetsuit are long-lasting equipment. Thus, though with some effort, you can save to purchase the equipment or use some kind of financial product and pay for everything in small installments. Here are some tips that can help you get what you need to start practicing surfing without too many hassles or sacrifices.

Price Range And Savings

The price range of surfboards goes from a couple of hundreds and up to a few thousands of dollars while a surf wetsuit can cost a couple of hundreds generally with some higher price rare exceptions that can be as high as one or two thousands dollars. All in all, the whole kit can demand an average price of a thousands dollars sometimes reaching higher amounts depending on the quality of the equipment.

Saving that kind of money is not such a difficult task. Yet, all depends on your income and spending. Modifying your budget to include a small amount every month towards a savings account for the purchase of the equipment should not be such a sacrifice. Yet, if you do not have that kind of control over your finances, you may want to resort to other means.

Financing The Purchase Of Equipment

Most of the stores selling this kind of equipment will accept credit cards without ado. They may even have some promotions specially tailored for credit card purchases. Bear in mind though, that financing with credit cards is rather expensive compared to most of the other financial products. Though using a credit card may be the most comfortable and quick financial option, chances are that it will not be the cheapest one.

Most banks and financial institutions are offering unsecured personal loans for their customers every day. It may be time to take advantage of these offers. Make sure to compare interest rates first (look especially to the APR which combines all costs in one so you can easily compare). Then analyze what kind of repayment program you would benefit more of. A longer repayment program implies lower monthly payments but higher amounts spent on interests while shorter repayment programs may entail higher monthly payments but the costs of financing will be lower.

If you decide to go for an unsecured personal loan, consider including the amount necessary for taking some lessons, if you are just starting to practice this sport. It is not that costly and it can save you a lot of time and hassles.

The requirements for getting approved for an unsecured loan are not that harsh. If you are already a client of the bank or financial institution, chances are that you may have a pre-approved loan available. Otherwise you may have to show proof of employment or income and provide authorization for a short credit verification.

Selecting a sleeveless wetsuit (also know as a longjohn) or a full-sleeve wetsuit will depend on a couple of factors. Arguments for opting for a sleeveless wetsuit would be:

The swimmer feels more flexibility in the shoulder area. Many swimmers feel restricted in full-sleeve wetsuits in the shoulder area. Sleeveless wetsuits will alleviate this feeling of restriction.

Training and racing swims are in warm waters. Sleeveless wetsuits can minimize any feelings of overheating.

For swimmers with short arms in proportion to their legs, the sleeves on a full-sleeve wetsuit may be too long resulting in excess space in the arms of the wetsuit. Consequently, the possibility of water pooling into the arms is more likely. If water does pool into the arms, any ballooning of water inside the arms can make it difficult to have a smooth stroke. For swimmers fitting this description, a sleeveless wetsuit can remedy this problem.

Sleeveless wetsuits will be easier to take off when transitioning from the swim to bike.

Arguments for opting for a full-sleeve wetsuit would be:

For swimmers who do not have feelings of restriction in the shoulder area, most top brand wetsuits are very technologically advanced and do a great job of making the neoprene thinner in the shoulder/underarm/latissimus dorsi area to aid with flexibility.

Training and racing swims are in colder waters. Full-sleeve wetsuits will keep the body warmer in cold waters.

Having full sleeves will result in less drag and a more hydrodynamic feel

In summary, a sleeveless wetsuit makes sense for the triathlete who is racing and training in warmer waters and who needs more flexibility in the shoulder area due to feelings of restriction when using a full-sleeve wetsuit. Also, a sleeveless wetsuit may be the answer for the swimmer who has shorter arms and can not find a full-sleeve wetsuit with short sleeves. On the contrary, a full-sleeve wetsuit is ideal for the triathlete who races and trains in predominantly colder waters and has no issues with flexibility. The final decision on whether to opt for a sleeveless or full-sleeve wetsuit is vital to the triathlete who continually strives for improvement. Making the right choice is critical and will improve the triathlete’s chance of starting off the triathlon on a positive note.
