Mauritius. This tropical Indian Ocean Paradise. ‘A drop in the ocean’ Is only a dot in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Mauritius has a well-developed infrastructure and tourism industry. It hosts visiting tourist from all over the world in luxury hotels, apartments and bungalows. Besides the beautiful long white beaches and crystal clear tropical lagoons, scuba diving is one of the main attractions for tourists.

The excellent sea conditions and beautiful coral reefs make Mauritius a perfect place to learn to dive.
So both beginners and certified divers can be sure to have safe enjoyable dives in these perfect conditions. Especially on the north east coast where the lagoons and sea are protected from the trade winds, the Grand Bay and Trou aux Biches areas host the best tropical fish life and coral reefs. Usually all are boat dives to dive sites outside the barrier reefs. This is because the barrier reefs run almost completely around the Island with breaks or passes in the reef through which boats can pass to get into the open sea. The lagoons inside the barrier reefs are shallow and not suitable for diving. The sites in crystal clear water outside the barrier reef are very specifically located and easily accessible by boat. To get the best out of your diving experience in Mauritius it is advisable to dive with one of the accredited dive centers that will take you to all the best sites and ensure that you have a safe comfortable scuba diving Mauritius experience.

The Tourism Authority in Mauritius controls all registered dive centers and issues licenses to the boat skippers and dive operator that meet the require standards. All internationally recognized diving certifications are accepted and Mauritius has become a training ground for beginner divers because of the extremely easy diving conditions.

Unlike the reefs in Seychelles and the Maledives islands the coral reefs have not been bleached or affected by the warming of the ocean. The crystal clear water, the abundance of fish life and colorful reefs provide magnificent backdrops for underwater photography and filming. In the Trou aux Biches and Grand bay areas artificial reefs have been create by sinking wrecks at specific points. These wrecks, usually old Japanese fishing trawlers host an abundance of fish and coral life creating exciting dive sites and interesting backdrops for underwater photo and film. There are no real wall dives in Mauritius. In most areas the seabed slopes away gradually becoming deeper as you move away from the barrier reefs. Therefore most dive sites have a bottom at a reasonable depth making diving for beginners and experienced diver safer and less stressful. There are however small drops like ledges on some of the sites creating very interesting giant rock structure hosting larger fish life, gorgonian fan coral, some soft corals and in some spots black coral.

All round Mauritius is really a very safe and interesting location for a diving holiday. There is something for everyone.

Looking for quality diving holiday on a ‘paradise island’, come Diving in Mauritius.

Watching all those cool surfers showing off on the tv-screen, walking that ultra-cool surfer walk from the water to the beach, with the surfbroad held tightly under the arm makes anyone want to be a surfer. But how does one start? Join a Surfschule (surfing-school) of course. Anyone can learn surfing, or Surfen as it is called in German, age no-bar, sex no-bar. All one needs is an adventurous heart, and a good teacher.

Surfen is all about balance. It’s about keeping your center of gravity intact while the waves throw you around. You need a really good pair of legs and a keen mind to be a good surfer. On the surf-board, you’ll be battling the waves, fighting to keep your balance and still managing to have a huge amount of fun. Sounds tempting? Find a surfschule, and you can experience it.

Luckily surfing has become so popular of late, that there are surf-schools everywhere. Go to any good surfing spots, and you will find shops renting or selling surfen gear. A surfschule shouldn’t be far off. Many shops also arrange lessons on demand from local pros.

As a beginner you can’t graduate straight to the surfboard that professionals use. That surfboard called the shortboard is harder to maneuver and balance for beginners and surfen won’t be any fun for you on this board. Every surfschule has a longer longboard that is easier to balance on. The longboard is supported better by the waves, and even a beginner should be able to keep upright. The longboard is usually between 8 to 10 feet long.

The second thing that you need is a good wetsuit. Almost every Surfschule has wetsuits in a variety of sizes to fit different builds of people and you should be able to rent one. If you want to buy a wetsuit, make sure you but something that’s comfortable. Don’t ever buy a wet suit that’s too tight, because then surfen will be punishment not pleasure.

Most people prefer buying a wetsuit to renting one, because it’s a pretty personal clothing item. Also it’s cheaper than a surfboard, so you can easily afford one. Surfen is addictive, and once you get started, you’re going to come back again and again. You can buy your surging gear from any surfing store, but do ask your surfschule instructor about the type of suit you need.

If you’re wondering how long it takes to get started with surfing, the answer is a week. If you take daily lessons and work on surfen with dedication and seriousness, you’ll be surfing upright in a week’s time. Of course you must possess a certain degree of agility and good reflexes. The first few days of surfen will be hard, but your surfschule instructor will guide you, and once this gestation period is finished, you should find surfing much more easier.

One thing that you need to remember is that surfen exposes you to a lot of water, and if you have any kind of skin allergies or problems that are related to salt-water, you need to make sure surfing is safe for you. Also ask your surfschule if there’s any dangerous marine life like stingrays around, and avoid the areas that you’re asked to.

That said, here’s the last bit of advice. Take it easy in the beginning! Yes, don’t imagine that you’ll be able to surf big waves straight way and don’t be disappointed when you can’t. Surfen like any sport needs time to master.

The wetsuit was originally designed to protect the wearer from hypothermia, a condition which the body heat drops below that which is required to maintain normal metabolism and body function, this can even occur in warmer water. The wetsuit benefits described here are based upon the insulation of the wearer, where a layer of water is trapped in the suits material, which is warmed up by the body heat and thus serves as a layer against the surrounding water. The predominant material used for this is that of neoprene, which is a synthetic rubber.

If one is participating in a sport, such as waterskiing or wake boarding, the wetsuit benefits the wearer from hard falls against the water when the skier or boarder falls. This comes in handy as the speeds that they travel at make the water feel as if they are falling onto a concrete slab. Hence with the help of the material, the wearer will enjoy a little more protection from the stinging fall than that of an individual not wearing a suit.

Scuba divers utilizing wetsuits enjoy a variety of wetsuit benefits in that they are offered a degree of protection from scraping against coral reefs when they are diving amongst the reefs. The users of these wetsuits are also protected from the harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun, and hence the use of sunscreen is reduced over those parts of the body that are covered by the suit.

The wetsuit benefits are not without controversy though, as those who utilize a suit in open water swimming events and triathlons believe that they enjoy a competitive advantage over those not wearing a suit. It is believed that a wetsuit benefits the wearer in terms of buoyancy and hydrodynamic curve, the later term basically meaning that the individual gets a distinct advantage from the more streamlined effect, as well as additional water forces aiding the wearer. In some triathlons the competitors are not allowed to wear a wetsuit and one should inquire as to whether this is allowed or not prior to entry in such a triathlon, as this may result in disqualification from winning any prizes in the competition.

The wetsuit normally represents an investment in ones interests, in terms of the sport or hobby that one pursues. It also provides additional benefits as described above and therefore one should ensure that proper care is taken in terms of the storage and maintenance of the item. There are a number of practices that you should follow when allowing the wetsuit to dry, such as rinsing out and hanging up correctly. One is advised to follow the instructions in washing and storing the wetsuit, as per the manufacturers instructions, in order to retain all the wetsuit benefits and features that these unique accessories offer the purchaser and wearer.

First and foremost, a really good fitting wetsuit is the most important thing to achieve before any other factor. A crappy wetsuit that fits your body shape is always going to perform better than a bad fitting high quality wetsuit.

That aside, wetsuit manufacturers really do put a lot of research and to refine their wetsuits year on year. So this years wetsuit will always be better than last years and so on. New paneling layouts, better super stretchy neoprene, improved wetsuit entry, neck seal, hard wearing knee pads to withstand lots of duck dives, key stashs and how the panels are fitted together are what you need to look for.

One of the main features that wetsuit manufacturers love to fiddle with is of course the neoprene itself. The top wetsuit manufacturers improve the stretchiness every year, all of them branding it as their own type of stretchy neoprene - Quiksilver’s Hyperstretch, Xcel’s Ultrastretch, Billabong’s Super Flex, Rip Curl’s elastomax, Alder’s "X stretch" and on they go!

So what you need to look for in a high performance wetsuit are: good fit, high quality stretchy neoprene, seam welded neoprene joining of panels and a secure seal around the neck.

When it comes to triathlon wear , there is a wide variety of options on the market. For triathletes, the difference in attire is truly a personal choice.

Although some teams may mandate specific uniforms, the sport is generally individual, allowing each participant to choose his or her desired outfit.
When it comes to triathlon wear , the traditional material is neoprene, the same type used in wetsuits.
This is generally due to chilly water temperatures that can cause you to lose valuable time due to cold shock.

Furthermore, using a wet suit for your triathlon suit allows you to use the item for other sports, including scuba diving or surfing.

There are three main items in triathlon wear : full, sleeveless, and two-piece suits.

Again, the choice is purely personal, as each different competitor enjoys a the feel, protection, and mobility of different suits.
The full suit is a one piece suit that covers arms and legs.
This suit is the best multisport suit and can complete cover the arms and legs completely or only cover the legs to the knees and the arms to the elbows.
Sleeveless suits are a one piece suit that stops coverage at the shoulders, but continues to cover the legs to either the knees or the ankles.
Finally, two-piece suits employ mix and match system for triathlon clothes that can include long or short bottoms with long tops, short tops, or no tops at all.

If you are interested in purchasing a multisport suit, consider the difference in the neoprene.
Suits made for surfing, kayaking, or diving are made from thicker, less movable neoprene that may not be flexible enough for the demanding sport of a triathlon.
Like other clothes , choose a suit that is in the middle of the road to ensure the most usefulness.

The neoprene of the wetsuit contains small bubbles of nitrogen gas. Nitrogen gas has a very low thermal conductivity. This prevents the heat inside the wetsuit from escaping to the water outside of the wetsuit. If you were in the water without a wetsuit on, the heat from your body would escape to the water because the water has a very high thermal conductivity.

The wetsuit does not prevent all of the water from getting inside the wetsuit. There is a thin layer of water that is allowed to get between the suit and the skin of the diver. The skin of the diver will warm the water. The water and the wetsuit will then serve as insulation against the cold water.

The warmth you get from the wetsuit will also be determined by the thickness of the neoprene. The suit will keep you warmer if the neoprene is thicker. The thickness is measured in millimeters. The largest size is 6 millimeters. Some manufacturers will use different thickness for different parts of the suit.

Another consideration that you might have, if you are concerned about staying warm, is how well your wetsuit fits on your body. If the wetsuit is too loose of a fit on your body, then the thin layer of water between your skin and the wetsuit might escape, along with some body heat. If the suit is not a close fit then cold water might rush into the suit, which prevents the water already inside the suit from warming up. If you use flexible seals around the openings near the feet, hands and neck, this might help keep the cold water out and the warm water in. You should choose a wetsuit that fits your body as tightly as possible, but it should not be so tight that it prevents you from having your full range of movement. You do not have to worry about the wetsuit shrinking when you get into the water, because they stay close to their original size.

There are neoprene wetsuits that have nylon fabric on the inside and a smooth surface on the outside. This is known as smooth skin neoprene. This type of wetsuit will keep you warmer because the smooth surface will absorb less water.

There is another type of neoprene wetsuit that has nylon fabric on both sides. This is known as nylon 2. The nylon 2 wetsuit is more durable than the smooth skin neoprene wetsuit. The nylon fabric will strengthen the wetsuit and make it easier to slip on and off. Neoprene wetsuits can be made using either one of two processes: chemical blown or gas blown. A chemical blown wetsuit feels softer and nicer. A gas blown wetsuit is more durable but it is also more expensive.

In the last several years, wetsuits containing merino wool and titanium thread have become popular. These suits are meant to help retain more body heat. These wetsuits are also more expensive than the neoprene wetsuits. There also are wetsuits that have no coatings and these are called skins. They fit very well and are very comfortable. They are hard to slip on and off, because they are very fragile.

You have probably noticed the skintight outfits that most athletes wear, especially those in water sports. Those are wetsuits; light-weight neoprene suits that are touted to boost your performance. It doesn’t matter if you’re a swimmer, running a triathlon or just a casual surfer, a wetsuit is for you.

They are mostly made from thin closed-celled neoprene, the same material used for laptop sleeves and electrical insulators. They are waterproof, built with seams which do not leak and lined with nylon for strength and easy wearing.

Wetsuits come in many versions, with different types used in various situations. The normal wetsuit you will get at a store is a warm-water wetsuit, which are best for tropical conditions. Cold-water wetsuits are for chillier climates, with added thickness and insulation. However, they restrict mobility and are quite uncomfortable.

From the warm-water wetsuit stems three designs. First, is the full-suit, or steamer, which covers the length of the arms and legs; used by those who want extensive protection. There is also the ’shorty’, which has short sleeves and legs, designed for those who want better mobility. Aside from that, there is the two-piece, which allows the wearer a choice between wearing either both pieces or just one. For added protection, hoods are also available.

The modern wetsuit is designed to complement the contours of your body and ultimately maximize your ability to swim or run. The logic goes that if your outfit is skintight, it will minimize hindering your movements and letting your body move faster. It also has natural buoyancy, thanks to the neoprene, and can help poor swimmers float better. However, due to these reasons, wetsuits are usually banned from official competitions, with competitors claiming that wetsuit-wearing participants have an unfair advantage.

Wetsuits can protect swimmers by helping them retain their body heat, of which excessive loss can lead to hypothermia. The suit allows water in and eventually a layer or water will exist between the swimmer’s body and the suit. This film of water acts as an insulator; receiving heat from the body and preventing it from escaping the suit. This function is further enhanced by the presence of nitrogen gas bubbles contained in the material of the suit. As nitrogen is a low heat conductor, it will repel the heat inwards towards the body and minimizing the risk of hypothermia.

So, if you are surfing, scuba-diving or just going for a swim at the beach for a few hours, get a wetsuit. It will protect you and then some.

Winter is a fact of life for many people who enjoy the sport of surfing. However, cold air and water temperatures don’t have to stop your sessions! Enter the wetsuit, probably the single biggest invention in surfing since the surfboard itself.

Wetsuits are tight fitting bodysuits made of flexible neoprene rubber. They work by trapping a thin layer of water between the neoprene and the skin. The body heats up this water, thus keeping the surfer warm.

When picking out a suit, you’re going to want to get one that is specifically designed for surfing. That means seeking out your local surf shop. Don’t go to a dive shop or swimming store. Surfing wetsuits are specially made to endure the specific repetitive motions that surfers make when they’re out in the ocean. For example, non-surfing suits can have seams in bad places that will cause major rashes when you’ve been paddling for a few hours.

Wetsuits come in different cuts, from short-sleeve spring suits (or shorties) to fullsuits with hoods. When it gets very cold, booties and gloves are also available. Caps and hoods are also available for suits that don’t have them already attached.

Surfers often have a quiver of wetsuits to accompany their quiver of different boards, especially in areas where the seasons change dramatically.

There are a variety of thicknesses from which to choose. From thin 2 mm spring suits, to 2/3 mm fullsuits, 4/3’s, 5/4/3’s, and 6/5/4’s. These numbers reference how thick the neoprene is in millimeters for different areas of the suit. Often the thickest neoprene will be in the torso and thighs, while the thinner areas will be on the arms and calves.

When getting a wetsuit, it’s important to set aside a block of time in order to try them on. Each company uses different models and they all have a slightly different fit.

The fit should be snug. Don’t buy them too loose or water will be able to freely enter the suit and the insulating effect will be lost. This means you shouldn’t buy a kid’s suit a few sizes too big so they can grow into it. They might as well not wear a suit at all. The neck is an important area to pay attention to. The collar should be snug so that water doesn’t freely enter and exit.

When looking at the pricetag, you do tend to get what you pay for. There are several different makes and models from each company, from budget to luxury. Often the higher priced wetsuits will have all sorts of cool things like sealed seams and improved zippers and entry/exit schemes.
